About This Festival

What: The Fingal Festival of History
When: Friday 29th September – Sunday 1st October
Where: Newbridge House, Donabate
Admission: Free

As part of Fingal County Council’s Creative Ireland programme, a The Fingal Festival of History will take place between Friday, September 29 and Sunday, October 1 in the magnificent Newbridge House, Donabate.

Everyone is invited to re-live the events of 100 years ago, especially those connected to the 1916 Rising. Organised by Fingal Libraries, admission is free over the entire festival. Talks and events will centre on historical Fingal figures such as the Kettle Family, who made their mark on Irish Society, and Thomas Ashe, as Brian Arnold looks at his legacy on the centenary year of his death. Dónal Fallon will examine the strange connections between Irish nationalism and Russian Bolshevism in this revolutionary period during his talk, Ireland and the Bolsheviks: What did the Russian Revolution mean for us?

Hugh O’Donnell will looks at the role of 1916 as a key fulcrum for, not only Ireland's self-determination but its resonance for people in other parts of the world. The festival will also screen the brilliant Fingal’s Finest – a feature length documentary depicting the little-known story of the Fifth 'Fingal' Battalion, Dublin Brigade of Irish Volunteers, led by Thomas Ashe and their actions during the 1916 Easter Rising as they achieved the only victory by the Irish Rebels at the Battle of Ashbourne. The 1916 Show is a family-friendly event giving children insight into life 100 years ago as they handle real artefacts!
